Omar's Defeats the Odds - Art

This is my dog Omar, He was born around July 2007. He is a Boston Terrier/Shar Pei mix. My husband and I rescued him as a wedding gift to each other in October of 2007. Almost three years later in 2010 Omar stopped walking. He just refused to go out to play one morning. But I didn't know why. I tried to get him up. But he couldn't stand. He was paralyzed in this rear legs. He was only 3 years old. The vets said it was a congenital birth defect in his spine. They also said that if they operated on his spine, he would only have a 30 percent chance of recovery. And would most likely never walk again. We had them go ahead and do the surgery. They remove a vertebrae from his back. They said he was to be caged all the time to keep from injuring himself further. So during his recovery I moved a mattress into my living room and placed it next to his cage. He didn't spend very much time alone. He normally slept on the mattress with me and my other dog Puddin'. He could still use his front legs, but I built him a harness that allowed me to carry his butt like a purse with really long straps. He could only walk using his front legs. And I would carry his rear end. And whenever he had to use the restroom, I positioned him to make it more comfortable. This went on for almost 8 months. We did physical therapy 3 times a day. And after surviving the surgery and defying all odds in April of 2011 He was able to start bearing weight on his back legs. Then he started taking steps like a drunken baby. He was very wobbly. Shortly after that he was able to do it on his own. He did it! He beat the odds! He recovered! Now he can walk. He can run. He can jump. And he can play; which is all he ever wants.
